Giuseppe Campagnola S.p.A.

Wine-making traditions since 1907 in the Marano di Valpolicella valley. Five generations enamoured of land, vineyards and grapes. A wine cellar achieving excellence thanks to the love and passion of its components.

History

The Campagnola Winery, a family-managed activity for four generation, is situated in Valgatara, in the small town of Marano di Valpolicella, centre of the “Classic” Valpolicella Area.

The passion for the art of wine-making goes back to Carlo Campagnola, who was involved at an early age in the wine trade, followed by his wife Caterina Zardini who, after the untimely death of her husband, courageously continued the business and in 1907 won the medal for the best “Vino Reccioto” at the Wine Exhibition in Verona.

The enterprising spirit of Carlo and Caterina was inherited by Giuseppe, one of ten children, who together with his brothers in 1926 acquired the “Antica Osteria ai Portoni Borsari” in Verona where the wines made on the family farm were sold.

In the 1940s, with the outbreak of World War II, he moved with his children Giancarlo and Luigi to the current location in Valgatara, where production and selection of classic Verona wines still continues and develops today. Giuseppe bought most of the vineyards from his brothers and continued his course with the goal of creating high quality products. This was how the current company gradually came into being and when the historic cellar was built, where still today the traditional Valpolicella red wines are aged.

Today, the Campagnola company cares for vineyards, selects grapes and collaborates actively with more than 50 winegrowers in the most vocational vineyards around Marano di Valpolicella for a total of about 80 hectares. It also has 30 hectares in the Bardolino area, 25 hectares near Mortegliano in Friuli Venezia Giulia and collaborates with wine-growers in the Soave area with about 20 hectares. In the last few years, Mr. Campagnola, managed also to diversify into new products, offering, besides the prestigious private selection, a large range of wines, both from the venetian territory and various Italian areas.

From 2000 to 2006, the Winery was totally renovated. The Company introduced also a boasts modern plant for drying the grapes used to make Recioto and Amarone, designed specifically to perform this operation in an entirely natural way.

Our wines are aged in two cellars: the historical “Bottaia”, built in the 1940s using local stone from ancient quarries in the Valpolicella area, installed below ground to maintain natural moisture and temperature. The “Barricaia” cellar built in 2000, is the most innovation and evocative part of the overall cellars; 700 French Allier oak casks (barrique) contain the finest wines during the delicate ageing process.

In the last few years, Campagnola has also worked hard to improve its ecological commitment and respect for the environment where it operates, convinced that this is the best way to protect the land that gives life to its wines.

This proudly brings the family company to the fifth generation. Luigi Campagnola handed down to his children and grandchildren with enthusiasm and constant dedication that special bond with the land, love for vineyards and wine, commitment and continued devotion to the art of wine-making, in the certainty that these features, upheld in more than 100 years of history, will continue to live on from generation to generation.
